Carol Griffin – Face of a Long Time Race Volunteer

Carol Griffin holds a special place in the history of the Komen Triangle Race for the Cure®.  Race founder Jeanne Peck was her best friend and Carol served as vice chair for the very first race in 1997.  Today, she is the longest-serving Triangle Race volunteer.

Carol and Jeanne were running buddies during their lunch breaks on the campus of North Carolina State University where they both worked. Jeanne mentioned to Carol that she wanted to bring a race to Raleigh, similar to ones she had participated in as a runner in the cities of Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. The race had special meaning to Jeanne who had survived breast cancer, diagnosed when she was 29 years old.

“Jeanne was the first person I knew who had breast cancer at such a young age. I was surprised,” recalls Carol. “She wanted to bring the Race for the Cure to the Triangle and I agreed to help her by handling race operations. I’ve been involved ever since.”

For more than 18 years, Carol has volunteered her time serving in various positions to ensure the Triangle Race is a success. From the Race’s very first vice chair to her current job as ambassador/liaison to Meredith College where the Race is held, Carol brings continuity and solid leadership skills to her role as a long-time Komen volunteer.

“I do this because of the great people involved in making this Race happen as well as the good work Komen does in our community to provide a continuum of care for those affected by breast cancer—from funding mammograms and treatments to the research conducted by our local universities,” Carol says.

Jeanne inspires Carol to this day, despite the fact she is no longer here. Jeanne died in 2009 after being diagnosed with lymphoma.

“You could say Jeanne was a reluctant leader. She was a kind and compassionate woman who made a lot happen in a quiet way without drawing a lot of attention to her,” Carol says.  She honors Jeanne by now leading the Race team, Jeanne’s Spirit of Komen, made up of more than 100 members.

Carol lives in Apex, but grew up in Eastern North Carolina. “I’m very excited to see how successful the Wilmington Race has been and the good things Komen is bringing to that part of the state.”

As the face of a long-time Race volunteer, Carol inspires other volunteers and Race participants who come back year after year–just as best friend Jeanne Peck inspired her.
