Where the end of breast cancer begins.

It was 1977 and I was a young mother of four. Breast cancer treatment was much different at that time than it is today. There were not “types” of breast cancer nor was any kind of DNA testing an option. The standard surgical treatment was a radical mastectomy, which is the removal of the entire breast, lymph nodes, and some muscles of the chest wall under the breast.

Thanks to research, this aggressive type of surgery is rarely needed to treat breast cancer today. Following my surgery, I endured two years of chemotherapy. At that time, I physically brought the chemo treatment home from the hospital, which I then poured into my daily orange juice. Even now, 42 years later, I cannot bear to stomach orange juice.

Despite significant progress, more than 42,000 women and men continue to die each year from breast cancer. This is #unacceptable. By investing in Susan G. Komen NC Triangle to the Coast (NCTC), you will help to stop breast cancer, fund breakthrough research, increase access to care, and ensure all those fighting breast cancer receive the lifesaving services they need.

This giving season, I invite you to join me in making a year-end donation to Komen NCTC.

While the course of treatment I endured has helped me maintain a cancer-free life for so many years, it was not the same for my daughter, Tracey. Nearly 3 years ago, I lost Tracey to metastatic breast cancer following her eight-year battle with this disease.

I want to stop breast cancer IN ITS TRACKS. Are you in?

It is because of Tracey that I became involved with Komen NCTC.  First as a race participant on her team, The Foo-Fighters (we affectionately called Tracey “Foo” as a child). Next, as a race volunteer. Currently, I have the honor of serving as Co-Chair for the 24th Annual Triangle Race for the Cure on Saturday, May 2, 2020!

I am inspired by Komen’s Bold Goal to reduce all breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026. Aimed at finding the cures, Komen NCTC has helped to invest more than $43 million to fund research in North Carolina and has contributed to the more than $1 billion invested globally in research.

I want to fund breakthroughs in research to SAVE LIVES. Are you in?

We need more research to find the cures. NO more moms, sisters, grandmothers, or daughters need to die from breast cancer. When you make a gift to Komen NCTC, you are investing in life-saving research so that no one else suffers from this diagnosis.

I want to help those who cannot PAY FOR TREATMENTS and ensure that all people receive the CARE THEY NEED. Are you in?

Komen NCTC is committed to providing needed breast health services across its 29-county service area. This year alone, Komen NCTC provided financial assistance to over 100 breast cancer patients in need through its Treatment Assistance Program, and supported over 1,500 screening and diagnostic services through its Community Health Program.

Your year-end gift will help fund much-needed breast health and breast cancer services, and help ensure all people receive the care they need and deserve.

I have SIX granddaughters, so I want a cure found before breast cancer attacks the next generation in my family. First me, then my daughter. NOT MY GRANDAUGHTERS!

We MUST find the CURES. I‘m all in. Are you?

Warmest regards,

Peggy Morrell
