2019 #KomenTri Race for the Cure Announced!
23rd Annual Susan G. Komen Triangle Race for the Cure® Returns to Research Triangle Park on Saturday, May 4th
Participant Registration opens Friday, January 11th
Research Triangle Park, NC (Jan. 9, 2019) – The 23rd Annual Susan G. Komen® Triangle Race for the Cure, presented locally by Duke Cancer Institute, will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at The Frontier in Research Triangle Park (RTP). Online registration for the race kicks off Friday, January 11, 2019.
“Komen’s history in the Triangle is long, our race fundraising achievements many, and work to end breast cancer forever continues. We are fully committed to our BOAL GOAL of reducing breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026,” said Pam Kohl, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen® North Carolina Triangle to the Coast (NCTC). “Our goal for the 2019 Triangle Race for the Cure is to raise significant funding to support local programs and national cutting-edge research, which will enable us to achieve our bold goal and save more lives from this disease.”
The Race attracts thousands of participants, many of whom are survivors and individuals living with metastatic breast cancer. The annual event features a 5k run/walk and an inspiring Survivor/Thriver Celebration that honors participants who have battled breast cancer, are battling breast cancer or are forever fighters. Plans also include a Tailgate Zone with food trucks, a beer-tasting garden, and fun activities for all ages.
“For a 18th consecutive year, Duke Cancer Institute is partnering with Komen Race For The Cure® to serve as local presenting sponsor,” said Michael Kastan, MD, PhD, Executive Director of Duke Cancer Institute. “The longtime relationship unites our shared passion to end breast cancer by ensuring science continues to move forward toward the cures.”
For the fourth year, The Research Triangle Foundation will host the Triangle Race for the Cure, one of the most successful education and fundraising events for breast cancer in the state. The race raises significant funds for the breast cancer movement, supports those living with metastatic breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
“In 2019, RTF is redoubling its effort to engage Park companies, contractors and vendors to support Komen’s bold 2026 goal,” says Scott Levitan, President & CEO of RTF. “Last year, the Triangle Region was the recipient of over $2M in Komen sponsored research grants. We must continue this important partnership.”
The Komen Triangle Race for the Cure® raises awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of the net funds raised stay in the local community to support breast health education, screening, treatment and programs for women and families in a 29-county service area. The remaining twenty-five percent supports Susan G. Komen’s national research program, which funds ground-breaking research, including breast cancer research at multiple North Carolina universities.
“We welcome families and people of all ages and fitness levels from walkers to elite runners and corporate teams. Join us this May and experience how Komen is more than crossing a finish line on race day. It’s where the end of breast cancer begins,” added Kohl.
About Susan G. Komen® and Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast
Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Komen has set a Bold Goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026. Since its founding in 1982, Komen has funded more than $956 million in research and provided more than $2.1 billion in funding to screening, education, treatment and psychosocial support programs serving millions of people in more than 30 countries worldwide.
