2016-2017 Grant Recipients

Komen NCTC is pleased to award $542,742 in grant funding to the following organizations. These projects were selected by an independent grant review panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving underserved, underinsured, or uninsured women in our 29-county service area in central and eastern North Carolina. The 2016-2017 recipients are:

Pay It Forward – Provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients undergoing treatment to help pay for the day to day necessities of life. Helps decrease financial burdens families experience as a result of paying for cancer care allowing them to stay in their home and pay their bills. Targets women living in Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Nash, Orange, Pitt and Wake counties.
Think PINK Columbus County: A Rural Breast Cancer Outreach Program – Helps reduce the disparities of breast cancer diagnoses and mortality rates among women living in Columbus County by improving screening rates, reducing late stage diagnoses and removing barriers to care through early detection education, screening mammograms and follow-up care for uninsured and underinsured populations.
Pitt County Breast Wellness Initiative  – Increases breast health awareness through culturally appropriate breast health education and reduces existing barriers associated with access to breast screening via navigation among uninsured and underinsured Black and Latina women age 40 and older in Pitt County.

Breast Cancer Diagnostics Assistance Program – Reduces the number of patients who fail to make or keep appointments for diagnostic screenings and related procedures by providing those services to low income women between the ages of 40-65 who have no insurance and/or high deductible/high co-pay insurance policies. In addition to diagnostic services, the program will also provide screening mammograms to women in need in Halifax, Northampton and Warren counties.

The Power of Pink – Increases awareness and knowledge about breast cancer and the importance of regular mammography for early detection. Uses a variety of approaches to reach the target populations of African American and older women age 50 and up living in Harnett County. Provides access to screening mammography through use of a mobile unit.
Bridging the Gaps in Breast Cancer Treatment 2016 – Improves access to breast cancer care for patients from Duplin, Edgecombe, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, Northampton, Onslow, Pitt, Sampson and Wilson counties by providing financial assistance for treatment modalities and post diagnostic services.
Increasing Mammography Screening in Southeastern NC in Partnership with NHRMC Foundation’s Pink Ribbon Project – This Regional Impact Grant will provide 300 no-cost screening mammograms to low-income, uninsured women living in Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender counties.

Project Access – Orange County – Increases access to regular breast cancer screening for low income, uninsured women in Orange County. Provides patient education, clinical breast exams, referrals for mammography and follow-up imaging and diagnostics for eligible patients.
Orange County Health Department, Emily Earnest 919-245-2388 
Project Access – Chatham County – Provides free access to screening mammography to low-income, uninsured individuals in Chatham County who require routine preventive screening. Provides Spanish-bilingual breast health education, clinical breast exams, mammography referrals and referral to treatment and survivorship services as necessary.
Rex Mammography Assistance Program – Screenings  – Provides screening mammograms at no cost to uninsured women using two mobile mammography units that travel throughout a 15 county area to offer women a convenient, affordable option for mammograms. Serves residents of Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Nash, Orange, Sampson, Vance Wake and Wilson counties.

Rex Mammography Assistance Program – Diagnostic Services – Provides free diagnostic mammograms and breast ultrasounds to uninsured patients living in Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Nash, Orange, Sampson, Vance Wake and Wilson counties.

Breast Cancer Treatment and Survivorship Assistance Program – Helps breast cancer patients avoid delays in treatment by addressing gaps and barriers to care and recovery. Supports timely, uninterrupted treatment for patients with financial hardships by providing them with patient navigation services. Serves patients in Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton, Pitt and Wilson counties.

Breast Health Screening Program –  Conducts breast cancer screenings for the uninsured and underinsured in Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton, Pitt and Wilson counties. In addition to baseline/screening mammograms, the program also provides diagnostic services to those in need.
